There's A War Going On In Your Heart

Maybe You Didn't Realize It, But There Is a

War Going On For the Destiny of Your Soul

There's A War for Your Soul

The Battle for Your Soul Has Already Begun

Right now, there is a war going on inside of your heart and mind. This war is between God and Satan about the final destination of your soul. Satan, who is your biggest enemy, wants to eat you alive and devour your soul. (2 Peter 5:8). But the battle that's being waged for your heart also involves "evil rulers and spiritual authorities in the unseen world. Mighty powers and evil spirits" which are attempting to influence and seduce your values and break down your morality so that you will stop listening to God (Ephesians 6:12 NLT).

Satan has already been at work on you, attempting to blind your mind so that you cannot see the truth which God is trying to share with you. (2 Corinthians 4:4 NLT). Actually, at this particular moment, it is quite likely that your mind is already "full of darkness." You have likely strayed far from the life which God gave you. Is your mind closed and your heart hardened against the message of the Lord? (See Why You Can't Understand).

It seems most have no sense of shame anymore. When someone sells out their passions to lustful pleasure and practice every kind of impurity they can think of, they lose their ability to see evil as being truly evil. Bad becomes good in their eyes and morality gets dumped upside down. We are living in the last days and just as God predicted, all sorts of depravity have rampantly engulfed our world. Soon Christ will return and the judgment will begin.

There are only two outcomes for the battle over your soul. If God does not win your heartóthen you already belong to Satan. There is no middle ground in this war. No halfway measures can keep you away from judgment if you are living in enemy held territory and supporting the devil's kingdom.

When you say to yourself that your deeds "really aren't that bad" you are calling God a liar (1 John 1:10). Of course, sin doesn't seem so bad to those who having been engaging in it for so long that they can't tell the difference between right and wrong. Your perception of evil has become numbed. Your ability to discern between black and white is impacted because you are walking in the darkness. When you live in a dark world and you believe that its okay because "everyone else does" you, my friend, are lost.

When someone has been completely conquered by Satan they simply enlist in his army. They have come to be so swayed by Satan's outlook that their thoughts are controlled by him. They are aligned with his flagrant wickedness and they'll be vocal against God and everything he stands for. They will become evangelists committed to encouraging others to engage in lives that are completely full up with corruption.

Can This Defeat Be Reversed?

Maybe at the moment you don't have any interest in allowing God to win this battle for your heart. But if you are not controlled by God, you are now in Satan's camp. He and his followers face judgment. The final outcome of this cosmic battle has already been decided. Satan and his demons have already rebelled against God and lost. They were cast out of heaven. While he has freedom to rule over this world now, in the end he loses Big Time. So if you stay on his side, you're only ensuring that you will be on the losing side. That means suffering an eternity of torture (just like everyone else who has rebelled). This is not a wise decision.

If the thought of being on Satan's side troubles you, it would be wise for you to take the time to take in this battle for your soul seriously. Your soul is the most important thing you possess. It alone will live on after your body dies. Jesus said, "What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?" (Matthew 16:26 TLB). If you give up your soul just for the passing pleasures of this life, you're a fool.

So I challenge you, think seriously about investigating the battle for your heart and mind now, while you still can. This may be your last chance to win this battle. You don't know how much more time you have.

This war is not won or lost in the physical realm. It is won on a spiritual level. To win it, you must use spiritual weapons to fight against the spiritual forces of wickedness in high places. To win this battle the strong resistance that is within your own human reasoning must be broken down. Your own false arguments must be destroyed (See 2 Corinthians 10:3-4). So how is this done?

First, Expose Yourself to God's Word.

You might be thinking, but I don't believe the Bible is true or that it is God's Word. To be honest, it really doesn't matter if you believe in the Bible or not. If an ancient soldier had a sword in his hand and his enemy didn't believe that sword was a powerful weapon, he could easily end up dead because he either ignored or underestimated the power of his opponent's weapon. Well, the Bible is a weapon just like that.

The Word of God is one of our most powerful spiritual weapons. Whether those who come up against it believe that it is true or not, doesn't really matter. Weapons are designed to be used, not defended. Let me show you how this works in the following passage of Scripture.

"For the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable." (Hebrews 4:12-13 NLT). Let's take a moment and focus more clearly on what this passage is saying to you:

For the Word of God is alive. The book of God is not a dead ancient manuscript. It's alive and when you read it that life will touch your heart. The Word of God is powerful. It is so powerful that when you are exposed to it, you will be impacted either good or bad. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It is so sharp that it cuts right into your being and reveals both sides of your heart. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. When you come into contact with the Word of God you will see yourself more clearly. Your true thoughts and desires will come to the surface and be compared with God's thoughts and desires. And either you will end up wanting his light in your life or you will cringe back into the darkness. But no matter what, your exposure to the Scripture will change you.

Nothing is hidden from God. Because God made everything, he cannot be lied to. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes. We all have secrets that we don't want anyone to know. You have no secrets that God doesn't already know. You can't escape from him just because you don't about what is right or wrong. He is the one to whom we are accountable. At the end of your life, you'll have to answer to him about the way you've lived your life. There will be no excuses then.

So this passage is telling you that if you expose yourself to his Word, God will convict you of your sin. He will show you what's wrong in your heart and why you need to come to him for deliverance. If you do not feel a sense of brokenness before God, let me suggest that you check out Coming Under Conviction.

I've included and am adding articles regularly on this website that will help you see yourself more clearly. Check out some of those articles. Read the passages of the Scripture that are contained in them. Allow God to speak to your heart.

Second, Give Up On All Your Silly Arguments Against God.

I remember when I was a senior in high school, one night I ended up in a friend's car with a rather crass friend of his. The kid was the school water polo goalie and he had already moved in with the mother of another student's mom and was having a sexual relationship with her. For a woman to live with a high school student is frowned upon today, but back in the early sixties that was quite rare.

My discussion with this guy came to focus on God's existence and this kid was making a strong case against about how mankind had created the God concept because we needed something to believe in. After he had dominated the conversation for at least twenty minutes, spewing out all sorts of logical arguments for his beliefs, I finally had an opportunity to reply.

I wasn't a very strong Christian at the time and didn't know a whole lot, but I knew one thing for sure. And I told him what it was:

"Well, maybe you're right. Maybe I am a fool for believing in God like you say. But then I look at your life, and see where your beliefs have brought you, and it sure looks like your arguments are only an excuse to let you live like you want. Some day we'll both die, and then we'll both know who was right. If you're right and I'm wrong, I won't have lost anything by living a moral life. But if I'm right and you're wrong, there will be hell to pay."

At that point he opened his mouth and a vile stream of curse words poured out like I had never heard before.

Most people's arguments are really nothing more than justifications for their corrupt lifestyles. To avoid guilt, a man must find a way to justify his behavior. So most come up with an elaborate rationale for "how it should be" if they were God.

But face reality. You are not God. And you don't get to write the rules. So no matter how many silly arguments you conjure up in your mind, you'll never really change the reality of what God says: "The soul that sins shall die."

Human reasoning will send you to hell. You must let God's Word destroy all of your false sin-justifying arguments. You must let God's Word destroy all of those proud obstacle that you have erected inside of your head to keep yourself from coming to the true knowledge of God. You must allow God to capture your rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. If you don't, you will have lost the war and end up burning forever.

"We are human, but we donít wage war as humans do. We use Godís mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NLT).

Now some think, It's just not right that God sends people to hell for sin. How can God do that if he is truly loving? If you are wondering that, check out the article on How Can A Loving God Condemn Sinners to Hell.

You need to concentrate on your life and saving it from the enemy of your soul who wants very much to keep you from the Lord. He offers you all sorts of carnal delights so that you'll follow him into the abyss. But don't believe his lies. You'll end up sharing eternity with Satan and his fallen angels.

Third, Pray to God for Light

The Bible says "Seek the LORD while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near." (Isaiah 55:6 NLT). I remember praying, Lord, if you are really there. If you are who you say you are. Forgive my sins and come into my life. And Lord, please reveal yourself to me. When you pray a prayer like that, God will answer it. He promises to listen and answer such prayers.

"Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:12-13 NASB)

God wants to have a relationship with you. That's a pretty awesome thought. When you have problems you can't get into see the President, your senator, or representative, and probably your mayor on short notice. But you can talk to the God who made the universe on a moment's notice. And he cares about you, so he's waiting for you to talk to him.

But if God doesn't answer your prayer, you should know some things:

"Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities [sins] have separated you from God; your sins have hidden his face from you so that he will not hear" (Isaiah 59:1-2). I think it is clear that God is wanting the right kind of prayer from those who don't know him yet. If you are not yet praying in brokenness, he may not respond.

God told the prophet Ezekiel that some people had "set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of me at all?" (Ezekiel 14:3). If your life is full of idolatry, again, it's likely that your prayers will bounce off the ceiling.

God wants you to seek him in honesty. The best prayer that an unbeliever can pray is one of seeking and brokenness before God. Those prayers he will definitely answer.
